The air conditioner evaporator coil receives low pressure low temperature refrigerant. As refrigerant passes through the evaporator coils it absorbs heat from the air that passes over the coils. In air conditioner troubleshooting it is important to check that the evaporator coil has the proper amount of designed air flow across the coils. It is also important the proper amount of refrigerant is available inside the evaporator coils.
The air conditioner system can be overcharged and too much refrigerant will be in the coils or the air conditioner system can be undercharged (possible refrigerant leak ) and not have enough refrigerant. In either case, if you are troubleshooting an air conditioner you will need to have the skills and the tools to know what a proper charge is for an air conditioner system. With airflow across the evaporator coil in air conditioner troubleshooting you need to check the filter to make sure it is not clogged with dirt or debris. Make sure the blower is turning the proper RPM's so that it pulls (or pushes) the proper amount of airflow across the evaporator coil. Too many supply vents closed off can cause air flow problems. The refrigerant gas travels from the evaporator coil to the compressor where it is changed from a low temperature low pressure refrigerant gas to high pressure high temperature gas. In troubleshooting air conditioners there is not much the layman can do to check the compressor without the proper tools. A basic air conditioner troubleshooting practice for a compressor is to check the wiring. Of course when checking any electrical components in any type of machinery or mechanical equipment is to disconnect or turn off the power to the equipment. In some cases the when an air conditioner fails the wires on the compressor could be burned off. In a troubleshooting especially air conditioner troubleshooting wires can be burned off because of a loose connection or corrosion. Corrosion can cause a loose connection. It is important any loose connections and corrosion be cleaned and terminated properly to the compressor terminals. Since nearly all residential and light commercial compressors are hermetically sealed compressors there is not much else you can do if there is a problem with the compressor when troubleshooting air conditioners. Going from the compressor to the condenser coil in air conditioner troubleshooting it is important the condenser coils have the proper amount of airflow flowing through the condenser coils. Many times in troubleshooting air conditioners the condenser coils are plugged by dirt and debris and need to be cleaned. Turning the power off to the unit before washing the coils is advised. If the fan motor is not working then it could be a bad motor or a bad relay or contactor that controls the fan motor. Proper knowledge of electro-mechanical controls and electric motors will help understand the problem much quicker when troubleshooting air conditioners.
